A faulty air suspension shock absorber – what repair options are there and what is the most cost-effective?

Air suspension is a critical part of the suspension system of many vehicles, especially luxury vehicles, SUVs, and commercial vehicles. It is responsible for ride comfort, road stability, and handling varying loads.
But like any mechanical system, it too can be damaged.

❗️ Did your car stall at night? Feeling unusual shaking? Did a warning light come on?
It is very likely that you have a malfunction in your air suspension.

In such a case, you have three main treatment options – but one of them is particularly recommended.

1. Replacement shock absorber (Aftermarket)

A replacement shock absorber is a component that is manufactured by a third-party manufacturer, rather than the original vehicle manufacturer. It is the cheapest option, and is usually easy and quick to obtain.

Advantages:

  • Relatively low cost.

  • High availability in stock.

Disadvantages:

  • Quality varies – not every replacement shock absorber is equal in quality.

  • There is not always complete compatibility with the vehicle system (electrical and mechanical).

  • Less reliable over time.

💡 Who is this suitable for? Mainly for owners of very old vehicles or in cases where the budget is very limited.

2. Replacement with a new original (OEM) shock absorber

An option that is considered "standard" – simply purchase a new shock absorber from the authorized importer or supplier.

Advantages:

  • New part from the manufacturer – fully compatible with the vehicle.

  • High expected lifespan.

Disadvantages:

  • Very expensive (sometimes thousands of shekels per bumper).

  • It's not always worth it, especially for an old car or when more than one brake is broken.

3. Repair and overhaul of the original suspension – the most recommended option

In many cases, there is really no need to replace the shock absorber – the original shock absorber can be professionally repaired and refurbished, returning it to function like new.

How does it work?

  • Dismantling the suspension and inspecting all components.

  • Replacing rubber seals, gaskets, sealing rings and internal parts.

  • Professional renovation and sealing with air pressure.

  • Pressure and leak test after assembly.

Advantages:
✅ Saves hundreds and sometimes thousands of shekels compared to buying new.
✅ Maintains the original vehicle – without the need for adjustments or new connections.
✅ High quality when the work is done in a professional laboratory.
✅ Includes warranty!

Disadvantages:

  • Requires professional knowledge – not every garage knows how to perform such a repair properly.

So what should you choose?

If your shock absorber is in good structural condition (no cracks or serious damage), there is no reason to spend a fortune on a new shock absorber or risk the quality of a replacement.
